Wind Load Estimation for Trees

Wind Load Estimation for Trees

With a team of researchers with extensive expertise in the fields of mechanics and wood physics, CD BioSciences is committed to developing advanced modeling and analysis techniques to provide clients with wind load assessment services for trees, providing vital information to better understand the effects of wind on trees.

Background

Wind damage is one of the main forms of tree damage. The response of trees to applied wind loads ranges from leaf sway and slight wind oscillation of the trunk within the elastic limits of the wood to physical damage manifesting as micro-failures within the trunk and roots, or even catastrophic damage by uprooting. Exposure to chronic wind loads may cause several thigmomorphogenic responses, including changes in tree shape and internal wood properties. It is therefore important to understand the wind loads on trees and their response to these loads.

Due to the economic and ecological importance of wind effects on trees, there has been a large amount of research focused on addressing this issue. These studies have typically attempted to understand and quantify the response of trees to different levels of wind loads, and the contribution of different factors to this response. An improved understanding of the mechanisms of wind loading on trees can help to better manage the risk of forest damage, and can also help us to understand the effects of wind exposure on wood properties and the potential impact on the wood products industry.

Our Services

We focus on advances in instrumentation and modeling techniques to understand this complex phenomenon to provide wind load assessment services. We help clients estimate the wind loads applied to individual trees and provide a relatively objective assessment of the tree's ability to withstand wind load areas. Our services include but are not limited to:

  • Estimation of wind loads
    • Mapping of canopy profiles, crown base and stem base points.
    • Describing the parameters of the local wind structure.
    • Estimating the dynamic response of trees to wind gusts.
  • Determination of stem elasticity
    • Statistical assessment based on strain gauge data.
    • Wood parameters based on standard species.
  • Determination of stability
    • Study of the vibration characteristics of tree trunks and branches under strong winds using vibration tests and numerical simulation techniques.
    • Prognosis of tipping loads due to small inclinations.
  • Data processing
    • Clear presentation of results in the form of safety factors and graphs.
    • Personalized and ready-to-print reports.

Wind Load Analysis of Different Types of Trees We Provide:

  • Several palm species
  • Urban forestry
  • Forestry plantations

Applications

  • Study on the mechanism of tree growth and development
  • Study on wind resistance of trees
  • Study on tree dynamics

To improve our understanding of tree wind load mechanics, CD BioSciences offers our clients high-quality wind load estimation services and assessment of the wind resistance of trees. Furthermore, we produce professional reports containing all the data required to prove the results. If you are interested in our services, please feel free to contact us directly for more details.
