Measurement of Cellulose Crystallinity Index

Measurement of Cellulose Crystallinity Index

The crystallinity of cellulose is closely related to the physical and chemical properties of cellulose. CD BioSciences is committed to developing modern biophysical analysis technology and providing customers with a variety of methods for determining the crystallinity of cellulose. Our excellent research team ensures that customers get the most professional and satisfactory service.

Background

Cellulose is a homogeneous polycrystalline macromolecular compound, which is a two-phase system connected by crystalline region with a regular arrangement of cellulose molecules and less structurally ordered amorphous region. The degree of crystalline completeness and the ratio of these two phases varies with the type of fibre and the location of the fibre. Crystallinity is a key parameter in describing the structural order of cellulose and represents the percentage of the crystalline zone to the total volume of the fibre in the cellulose.

The chemical and physicochemical properties of the fibre are all closely related to the degree of crystallinity. The crystallinity affects the accessibility and responsiveness of a given cellulose substrate to biomass conversion enzymes. Furthermore, higher cellulose crystallinity leads to better mechanical properties such as increased tensile density, strength and hardness. The measurement of cellulose crystallinity is significant for investigating the properties of cellulose and for the forestry chemical industry and wood modification.

Our Services

The crystallinity of cellulose has been evaluated by a variety of techniques, such as X-ray diffraction (XRD), SS-NMR, differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), IR and Raman spectroscopy, and SFG spectroscopy. The crystallinity data of cellulose obtained by different detection methods and calculation methods are different. The technical services we offer include but are not limited to:

  • We offer XRD to help our customers study the crystalline structure of cellulose. We measure the cell size and crystallinity in the cellulose fibre crystal chain based on the intensity and location of the strongest point of diffraction. The method has established reliability and accuracy and requires minimal sample preparation.
  • We use infrared spectroscopy to analyze the intramolecular and intermolecular hydrogen bonds found in crystalline cellulose and determine crystallinity by heavy hydrogen substitution, Nelson and O' Connor methods.
  • We offer Raman spectroscopy to differentiate between crystalline and amorphous cellulose in cellulose I for crystallinity determination.
  • We offer a 13C-NMR method to investigate the effect of crystallinity on cellulose degradation and to determine the crystallinity of wood.
