Biomechanics

Biomechanics is a branch of biophysics that applies mechanical principles and methods to quantitatively study mechanical problems in living organisms. Its research scope ranges from biological wholes to systems and organs (including blood, body fluids, organs, bones, etc.). We use biophysical techniques can reveal the mechanical properties of cells, the impact of the mechanical environment on cell biological functions, cell adhesion and aggregation dynamics, and mechanical signal transduction.

Applications in Biomechanics

Biomolecules and Cell Mechanics

We provide atomic force microscopy (AFM) measurements of the mechanical properties of biomolecules, including the forces required to extend biopolymers and the strength of molecular motors such as myosin. Based on this molecular-level data, we can further employ computers to model intracellular phenomena. In addition, we can use high-resolution imaging to observe the morphological changes of cells in different mechanical environments and measure their mechanical parameters, such as elastic modulus and adhesion force. With this foundation, we can explore the mechanism of cellular response to mechanical stimuli, thus accelerating cellular mechanic research.

Biological Tissue and Organ Mechanics

Biomechanics utilizes mechanical principles and methods to quantitatively study mechanical problems in living organisms across organ development, regeneration, and tissue engineering. Our technology platform uses specialized equipment and methods, such as biomechanical testers, to measure the mechanical properties of biological tissues (e.g., muscle, bone, blood vessels, etc.), such as stress-strain relationships and elastic modulus. In addition, our combination of optical imaging and ultrasound imaging allows us to non-invasively observe the mechanical changes of biological tissues, such as contraction and diastole of cardiac muscle and hemodynamics of blood vessels.

Biomechanical Modeling and Simulation

We use computers to build finite element models of organisms, which can simulate the mechanical response of organisms under external loads and predict their deformation and stress distribution. In addition, we can build biomechanical models at different scales from molecules and cells to tissues and organs to fully understand the mechanical behavior of organisms.

Biomedical Engineering

We provide specialized biomechanical testing and analysis techniques to design more ergonomic artificial organs (e.g., artificial heart valves, joints, etc.) and implants to improve their longevity and biocompatibility. In addition, our team uses scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM), and other techniques to characterize the structure of different biomaterials to further provide technical support for the design and optimization of materials in tissue engineering.
