Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

Differential Scanning Calorimetry (DSC)

Thermal analysis is a class of techniques for measuring the relationship between the physical properties of a substance and its temperature under programmed temperature control. It is mainly used to study physical changes (crystalline transformation, melting, sublimation, adsorption, etc.) and chemical changes (dehydration, decomposition, oxidation, reduction, etc.). Thermal analysis not only provides thermodynamic parameters but also can give a certain reference value of kinetic data. Therefore, thermal analysis is an important analytical tool in the selection of materials as well as in the theoretical study of thermodynamics and kinetics.

Introduction

Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) is a thermal analysis method that measures the difference in heat flow power input to a sample and a reference as a function of temperature under programmed temperature control conditions. DSC puts the sample under the control of a certain temperature program and observes the change of the heat flow power difference between the sample and the reference material with temperature or time, to obtain information on the heat effect of the sample in the process of the temperature program, such as heat absorption, exothermic, specific heat change, and other related information. In addition, the technique can also calculate the heat absorption and excretion (enthalpy) of thermal effects and the characteristic temperatures (onset, peak, endpoint, etc.).

As an undisputed expert in the field of biophysics, CD BioSciences is committed to providing DSC services to meet all of our client's needs.

Working Principle

When the physical properties of substances change, such as crystallization, melting, crystal transformation, or chemical changes, often accompanied by thermodynamic properties of specific heat and thermal conductivity changes, DSC is through the determination of its thermodynamic properties of the changes in the process of physical or chemical changes to characterize.

Main Applications

  • Materials Research

DSC is used to study the melting point, glass transition temperature, crystallinity, phase transition, and other properties of materials. We can provide specialized DSC techniques for material property determination to analyze the complete structure and conformation of complex molecules and mixtures.

  • Chemical Research

Our DSC technique can be used to determine the thermal stability and reaction rate of compounds, which is important for studying chemical reaction kinetics and reaction mechanisms.

  • Biomedical Research

We can further study the structure and function of biomolecules, such as proteins and nucleic acids, using DSC technology, which contributes to the understanding of thermodynamic processes and interactions of biomolecules in organisms.
