Modeling of Wood Cell Wall and Fibre Properties

CD BioSciences is committed to developing the ability to model wood cell wall and fibre properties based on the structural organization in different cell wall structures to help our customers gain insight into the polymers of the wood cell wall and their interactions. Our reliable modeling service will contribute to your research on the biomechanics of wood cell walls.

Background

The entire wood structure is a highly mixed biopolymeric assembly of various structural elements. At the level of the wood cell wall, the structural organization is a composite consisting mainly of cellulose microfibrils, amorphous hemicellulose and lignin. The study of the complexity of the wood cell wall in terms of the cellulose fibre network, the structure of cellulose aggregates and the arrangement of matrix polymers is key to making better use of the wood materials.

Understanding of the arrangement of cell wall lignin polymer components still relies on indirect observations of their response to specific techniques or methods. In recent years, advances in modeling techniques have increased our understanding of the role of different wood polymer components and their arrangement for the mechanical properties of the cell wall. Several models have been proposed to understand the mechanical properties of wood cell walls, relying on knowledge of the thermomechanical properties of wood polymers and their structural arrangement in different cell wall elements.

Our Services

We focus on all aspects of cell wall elasticity and help our customers to model the elastic properties under both dry and moist conditions, the hygroexpansive properties and the relationship with the microfibril angle. Our services include, but are not limited to:

  • Micromechanical modeling of wood and fibre properties
We have developed models of the cell structure of wood and microfibres in the cell walls to help clients determine the stiffness and shrinkage properties of wood.
  • Micromechanical modeling of wood fibre composites
We have developed models that allow the treatment of orthotropic anisotropic phase swelling to analyze the effect of wood fibre ultrastructure and cell wall hygroelastic properties on wood fibre composite hygroexpansion.
  • Modeling of wood cell deformation transverse to the fibre axis
We carry out finite element modeling of wet wood under compression and combined shear and compression loading to help our customers investigate the factors controlling the mechanical behavior of fibre networks.
